Rescue and Owner Surrender Information and Policies

As most people know, any good breeder should be willing to take in the occasional rescue or owner surrender. Here at RDZC Ranch, we will always take back an animal from our breeding free of charge with no questions asked. We do not offer payment for taking in an unwanted animal that we may be housing through their natural lifespan. All chinchillas that are surrendered to RDZC are taken on with the hopes of rehoming, but with an understanding that they will most likely be permanent residents.

For animals bred by RDZC Ranch and purchased from us, we will take the animal back with no surrender fee charge. We do not pay to take our animals back. Once an animal has left our care, we are no longer guaranteed anything about their health or husbandry. We take the animals back understanding that they may need several months to recover before being offered for rehoming.

For animals not bred by RDZC Ranch or purchased/adopted from RDZC ranch, we charge a flat $20 surrender fee when space is readily available. If we are at or near capacity for rescues/surrenders, the fee for surrender is $60 and the cage must be surrendered with the chinchilla. The surrender fee goes immediately to the care of the animal and provides necessary support for 2 months. All animals coming through our facility must undergo a 30 day quarantine period to be assessed for health and communicable disease. Once they are cleared, this gives approximately 1 month to search for an appropriate, permanent home for the chinchilla. Medical costs, time, and all but the essential care items are not calculated into the surrender fee. You may surrender a cage with the animal, but it is not a necessity. To recoop costs spent on the animal, we encourage you to sell supplies purchased that do not require the long term care that a living animal requires.

All animals rehomed as rescues do not come with a health guarantee. All animals are available for adoption when their body condition is healthy and other habits like eating, drinking, pooping, and activity levels are indicative of an overall healthy animal. These animals, however, were not bred at our ranch so we cannot guarantee the animals are free from genetic complications, heart issues, or other organ failures. We do our best to place happy, healthy chinchillas into long term loving homes, but be advised that their health and freedom from genetic disorders is not guaranteed. Rescue and surrender chinchillas are sold "as is" and once they leave our facility all medical bills become the sole responsibility of the adopter.

Chinchillas Available for Adoption

Here you will find information regarding available chinchillas. Each chinchilla comes with their own background and story for how they got here to RDZC Ranch. Our pricing for rescues is a set, flat fee. Costs do not increase or decrease based on the animal's history or stay at RDZC. Adoption fees for standard grey chinchillas are $100 and adoption fees for mutation chinchillas are $150. These prices are set to ensure the animal's will be cared for properly with proper thought put into the longevity, needs, and veterinary care costs of these exotic animals. These prices are non-negotiable. These prices do NOT offset the cost of proper veterinary care and the time and effort we spend to rehabilitate these animals. The fee is set to ensure these rescued chinchillas do not end up in irresponsible homes and have to suffer through the same fate of rehoming or neglect.

Adoption Process

RDZC Ranch is an individually operated hobby breeding operation. We are not a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and we do not ask for or expect donations to assist in caring for and rehoming these rescues and owner surrenders. We take in unwanted chinchillas as our efforts to give back to the community and assist these special little creatures that cannot help themselves.

There is no adoption form to fill out and no house visits or references needed for adoption. We do have potential adopters meet with us for a visit to meet the intended adoptee and for an extensive meet and greet. The typical adoption appointment is 1-2 hours in length and we will ask many questions about care, caging, and experience with chinchillas. The only thing we use lack of experience for is how extensively to discuss proper care and caging of the animals. Please email us through the contact us form to set up an appointment!

Donations

Donations for the rescue and owner surrenders can be sent through PayPal. We prefer donations of toys and supplies to monetary donations, but all donations are accepted. Your donation goes directly towards helping neglected or unwanted chinchillas find their forever home. Vet fees, food, housing, treats, toys, ledges, and round the clock TLC and care are all things that your donation goes towards. We do NOT use the funds for anything other than the rescues and owner surrenders. This is operated separate from our breeding herd in a separate bank account to ensure funds are used appropriately. We are NOT a 501(c)-3 non-profit so these donations are NOT tax refundable. We thank you for any and all support!

Standard Grey Rescues Available

One-Eyed Willie (ADOPTED!)

One-Eyed Willie is an owner surrender that came to us with a severe eye injury. The previous owners got him from a pet store to go with their other chinchilla and they didn't do proper introductions which led to fighting and the loss of Willie's eye. The eye is still there, but is non-functional. Our veterinarian opted to not do surgery to remove the eye as it had already healed over considerably and surgery is always risky for chinchillas. He did warn that if the eye becomes chronically infected as Willie ages, he may eventually need surgery, but most cases they have seen do fine and do better without the surgery. I estimate based on their time of purchase, that Willie is roughly 1-2 years old, though there is no way to know for sure when they come from a pet store.

Mutation Rescues Available

Kya (ADOPTED!)

Kya is a young sapphire male, probably about a year old. He came to RDZC Ranch because the previous owners decided a chinchilla was not the cuddly pet they wanted. Kya is a fur chewer and responds to stress and change by chewing his fur. This is a lifelong condition for him and will not improve with age or care. It is something that his new owners will have to accept as a Kya quirk! Fur chewing is not something that can be treated and does not alter his quality of life...it simply looks like he has had a bad hair cut everyday because he barbers his own fur.
